Company History:FrancisA. Woods of Chicago first made attempts at producing an electric carthat could be converted to gasoline power in less than 10 minutes.Although it was never put into production, it is believed that hemanufactured one such “Interurban”. After the failure of thisventure, Woods turned his attention to producing a small, affordablevehicle that would, “Give gasoline a new value, a new worth, newdistances, new mileages, ” according to advertisements. The WoodsMobilette was introduced with tandem seating and an air-cooled enginein 1911. Production began in 1913 peaked in 1914, with an estimated 1, 000 units permonth rolling off the assembly line. In 1916 Woods introduced theModel 5, featuring staggered seating. Though this was a step in theright direction, providing improved comfort over the tandem seating, the Mobilette proved to be no competition for the inexpensive FordModel T. By 1917 production of the Woods Mobilette had ceased. WoodsMobilette produced their cars in Harvey, Illinoisbetween 1913 and 1917. The car was touted as “America’s FirstCyclecar”, one of over 233 cyclecar companies which existed inNorth America for only a short period of time. Francis A. Woods’first Mobilette prototype Model No. 1 was built by Woods in 1910.Sometime during 1911-1912 Woods built the Model No. 2, which waspowered by a four cylinder 12 HP air cooled engine. Model No. 3 wasWoods’ first production model with both staggered seat (Sociable)and Tandem seating roadster being powered by a 12 HP water cooledWoods Mobilette engine. The Mobilette engines were foundered byseveral foundries over the course of production. The Model No’s. 4– 4A’s consisted mostly of specialty small trucks both pickup andpanel truck types. The Model No. 5 went into production in 1916 withthe 1917 Model 5A’s to follow. These 5A’s were the last models ofthe Woods Mobilette vehicles and the most expensive models. One 1917Woods Mobilette Model No. 5A staggered seat (Sociable) roadster isknown to still exist and is on display at the Henry Ford Museum inDetroit. Being a Model No. 5A, those Woods Mobilettes are powered bya 22 HP water-cooled four cylinder Perkins engine with a 3 speedfloor shifted transmission mounted to the rear of the engine. These5A models were unlike all previous Woods Mobilette production modelswhich had a 2 speed real axle as their transmission. The 1917 5AWoods Mobilette roadster at the Henry Ford Museum carries serialnumber 2444. Since W. M. Sheridan, an investment banker from Chicago, had supported Francis A. Woods in his business venture; the mostexpensive Woods Mobilette at $540.00 was designated “Sheridan LightDelivery”. This model was also powered by the 22 HP Perkins enginecast under license by Massnick and Phipps a foundry in DetroitMichigan. (see attached photos of 1913 and 1916 Woods Mobilette cars)
