Central Ohio Rail Road Company Stock CertificateNo. 258 issued March 3, 1866to IJ P Kilbreth & Co. for 11 shares at Zanesville, Ohio. Document has very nice vignette of train withwood burning locomotive leaving city with arched viaduct in background. A secondvignette on the left side reveals a farmer with scythe in hand, water drivenmill and train going over arched viaduct in background. A third small vignettein the bottom center shows two maidens sitting next to a reflec...tion of waterand fields. Certificate was surrendered November 26, 1866. A very nice RevenueStamp is attached to the front of the certificate. Certificate has two foldsbut is otherwise in good condition. Central Ohio Railroad Co.This companywas organized and incorporated by an Act of the Ohio Legislature onFebruary 8, 1847 as Central OhioRailroad Company to build a railroad from Columbus through Newark andZanesville to the Ohio River at Bellaire, Ohio near Wheeling , West Virginia.Additional amendatory acts were passed granting additional rights on March 8, 1849 and again on March 20, 1851. Beforethe road was completed the company became insolvent and the road was sold underforeclosure proceedings and reorganized. The road was then operated by TheBaltimore and Ohio Railroad Company. On August 31, 1864 while the road was in the hands of a receiver with the consent of thecourt, the receiver and company entered into a contract for the sale of theundivided half of the road between Columbus and Newark, thirty-three miles, to theSteubenville and Indiana Railroad Company. A doubletrack was built between Columbus andNewark, so that both companies, the Baltimore and Ohioand the S&IR RR Co successor Pittsburg, Cincinnati, Chicagoand St. Louis were amply accommodated.On December 1, 1866 the company as reorganized entered into an agreement with The Baltimore and Ohio Railroad Company for the use and occupationof the road for a term of years, the time subject to extension on certainconditions. On February 9, 1869 Central Ohio Company leased the Sandusky, Mansfield and Newark Railroad with a guarantee of The Baltimore and OhioRailroad Company, which was a party to the contractOn January 3, 1890 Central Ohio Railroad Company leased the Columbus and Cincinnati Midland Railroad for ninety-nine (99)years, renewable forever. The lease assigned to the Baltimoreand Ohio Railroad Company. The result of these several leases gave tothe Central Ohio Railroad Company, operated by the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad Company, the following lines ofroad1) Central OhioMain line - 137 Miles 2) Newark toSandusky - 116 Miles 3) Col. toMidland - 71.2 Miles Total 324.2 MilesOn the 29th ofFebruary, 1896, in the case of the Mercantile Trust Company against the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad Company in the Circuit Court ofthe United States for the District of Maryland, John K. Cowan and Oscar G.Murray were appointed receivers of that company, and in auxiliary proceedingsin the Circuit Court of the United States for the Northern and SouthernDistricts of Ohio, the same receivers were appointed for the property leased inOhio. Immediately after the appointment of the receivers they notified thedirectors of the company they would not operate the road under the terms of thelease. In the meantime, under the plan of reorganization of the Baltimore and Ohio Company, a proposition was made to thestockholders of the Central Ohio Railway Company to paythem for their stock seven dollars and fifty cents in cash and the balance ofthe face of the stock in preferred stock of the Baltimore andOhio Railroad Company. This proposition was accepted, and the property is operated by the Baltimore and Ohio practically under the ownership of the stockof the Central Ohio Company.
