At the American Numismatic Association's Convention in Baltimore on July28, 1993 The Banco de Mexico held a press conference to announce the beginning of a new commemorative coinage program. This new program would be known as "The Pre-Columbian Coin program" and consist of three collections: the Aztec, Central Veracruz, and Mayan collections.
This coin is from the third, Mayan collection which honors the Mayan culture. The coin depicts the stepped Piramide del Castillo, dedica...ted to the Maya god Kukulcan, the deified personality of a mythical king. It is said he restored the city of Chichen Itza.
Coin Details: Commissioned by the Banco de Mexico; Weight: 5 troy ounces - .999 Fine Silver. Obverse: National arms inside an hexagon, with weight and fineness at bottom outside it; lettering “Estados Unidos Mexicanos”. Reverse: Pirámide del Castillo inside a hexagon, with date mint and legend. With value at bottom outside it.
