BRAUNSCHWEIG 1918 "Bolshevik Notgeld" 10 Mark Grossnotgeld German Banknote
As the misery of World War I dragged on, desperate Germans were increasingly drawn to the revolutionary ideals of the Bolshevik revolution that had occurred in Russia. In October 1918, one month before the end of the war, some areas were taken over by communist revolutionary "Soldiers and Workers Councils" (Arbeiter- und Soldatenräte), as is the case here. The "A.S.R. BR." on the side of the note stands for ...Arbeiter- und Soldatenrat Braunschweig. These notes became known to collectors very quickly as "Bolshevik Notgeld, " as was mentioned in an advertisement by Braunschweig's preeminent Notgeld publishing house, E. Appelhans.
