Offered for yourconsideration is a 50 cent note from the third issue of fractional currency.This note was catalogued by the late Robert Friedberg as Fr. 1342. The centralvignette depicts a facing portrait of Francis E. Spinner, the Treasurer of theUnited States from 1861 through 1875. Printed above this portrait, presented inan arc, is “UNITED STATES FRACTIONALCURRENCY”, while the denomination appears on eit...her side of the portrait, asdoes the statement that these notes were “FURNISHEDONLY BY THE ASSISTANT Treasurers AND DESIGNATED DEPOSITARIES OF THE UnitedStates”. The engraved signature of “S.B. Colby” and “F. E. Spinner”appear at the conclusion. Below this is printed “RECEIVABLE FOR ALL UNITED STATES STAMPS”, in bold letters. Thelatter statement refers to the original reason for the issuance of thefractional notes, that is, to replace postage stamps that were being used ascurrency due to a lack of small denomination specie. These stamps did notremain long in circulation and small denomination notes were produced anddistributed to alleviate the deficiencies of the postage issues. A bronzeanti-counterfeiting overprint can be seen on the denomination flanking theportrait. A small “a” can be seen at the lower left. The back design, printedin green, features intricate patterns intended to make the note difficult tocounterfeit. Also present are the denomination (twice) and a statement whichreads (in part), “THIS NOTE ISEXCHANGEABLE FOR UNITED STATES NOTES by the Assistant Treasures and designatedDepositaries … in sums not less than THREE DOLLARS …”. The denomination, innumerical format, is presented in bronze at the center. This note was “ENG. & PRINT. AT THE TREASURY”, afact verified by the imprint on the face and the back. This high-grade examplewould make a great addition to any United States currency collection. Given itscondition, this piece should elicit serious bidding activity.This note has beenprofessionally graded and encapsulated by Paper Money Guaranty as “About Uncirculated 55”, with thespecial designation “Great Embossing”on the back.
