The 1966 and 1966-A $100 are the only small size Legal Tender denomination over $5 dollars. These were not used in commerce and were used to redeem in bulk Legal Tender Notes of other denominations. This was done for accounting purposes in order to adhere to the Act of May 3, 1878 which limited face value of legal tenders to the precise amount of $346, 861, 016. By 1996 those notes held by the Treasury had been destroyed. These hundred dollars bill are extremely popular with collector...s as they have the very distinct red overprinted seal and serial numbers.
