WWII AAF Cloth Chart Pilot Escape Map Philippine Series (Two-sidedmap) No. C-43 and C-44 Both sides read AAF CLOTH CHART - PHILIPPINE SERIES at the topcenter. Side 1 is titled: NO. C-43, MINDANAO ISLAND. Side 2 is titled: NO. C-44, NORTH BORNEO.The chart was produced by the Army Map Service U.S. Army WashingtonD.C. From the estate of a WWIIPacific B-24 pilot, this is a vintage, original, WWII Army Air Force 2-sidedcolor cloth "escape" map which is dated July, 1944. ...; The war inthe Pacific still had almost 18 months to go before Japan surrendered unconditionally.Pilots were issued thesemaps for use if their plane was shot down and they needed to plan their escapeto safety. They were sometimes sewn inside jackets or hiddenelsewhere in case they were needed. Evasion maps were light, durableand did not rustle due to being printed on silk or fabric rather than paper. Fascinatingfor the detail they record these maps also bring into sharp focus the risksthat were taken by these young men. Originally issued as a restricted map.Restrictions on use are no longer in effect. It is twosided and measures 37 inches high by 20 inches wide. This map has strong colors and show towns, main roads, elevations, sea currents, and prevailing winds. At the time this chart was produced, understanding of the jetstream was rudimentary. High altitude wind currents are shown though not in asmuch detail as a modern chart/map. Pilots and crews learned that there were somevery strong air currents aloft when their aircraft's times to targets took muchlonger than anticipated and the return trips went faster. This chart/mapreflects the limited knowledge of the time but was a tremendous help to thepilots and crews nonetheless. This map has been folded, andhas a couple of condition issues: Thereare some brown stains (blood?) and there is a hole/tear, but doesn’t appear tobe in an important part of the map. (Seephotos) It has been carefully stored for the last 70+ years. It is rich in color and detail and became very important in the beginning of1945.
