This is as nice of an original World War 1 German canteen as we have had in many years. This is a M1915 model "Feldflasche" with a full leather harness and complete original felt cover. The only missing part is the very end of the leather fob that attached the cork stopper, with what remains of the fob tucked into the leather ring around the top of the canteen. A string has been attached at some point in it's place to prevent losing the cork top. The M1915 cante...en was constructed of an enameled steel body with a cork stopper with a stamped steel cap on top. The M1915 was essentially a modified model of the of the 1893 Feldflasche, with steel used in it's construction due to the shortage of aluminum originally used in the construction of the 1893 model. As you can see in the pictures, this example is very attractive and remains in great shape overall. The enameled steel body feels free of any dents or damage, and the leather in the full harness is still somewhat pliable and soft. The harness still has the original metal snap hook and buckle in place, and both ends of the straps that fasten at the bottom of the canteen are intact. The original cork stopper top is still with this one, although the cork has shrunk enough over time to not seal tightly now. The original wool "Feldgrau" cover is in excellent shape overall, with all of the original snap buttons intact and functional, and all of the original stitching intact. If you have been looking for a great all-original World War 1 German canteen for your collection, this M1915 example would be an excellent choice. It isn't very often that we come across these 100 plus year old canteens in such great shape and un-molested. Low starting bid and no reserve!
