$20.00 Hagerstown Bank (MD) Remainder - PMG Gem Uncirculated 65 EPQ
Offered for yourconsideration is a $20.00 (a significant amount for the time) obsolete banknoteprepared for issuance prior to the Civil War, though it was never actuallyreleased. The central vignette depicts two seated females, the one to theviewer’s left probably intended to represent America, while the other seems toexhibit the attributes associated with Commerce. The America figure sits besidea United States sh...ield, with a Native American bow atop. The figurerepresenting Commerce sits with her hand outstretched toward ships at sea, arudder in her other hand. A caduceus lays on the ground at their feet. Aboveand below this scene is a financial obligation which reads “The President, Directors, and Company of THE HHAGERSTOWN BANK Will payTWENTY DOLLARS on demand to bearer”, with “HAGERSTOWN, MD.” and a blank line for the date. Two additionalblank lines appear at the conclusion, one for the signature of the “Cashr.” and the other for the “Prest.”. At the left, a rectangularvignette depicts a seated woman with a child, a sheaf of wheat behind, whileanother vignette, at the opposite end, shows a man with various animals. Thedenomination appears in each corner. This note is un-numbered, un-dated, andun-signed, indicating that it was never issued for circulation (any note placedinto circulation required all of those elements to be filled in). The back ofthis piece, in common with many notes of the era, was left blank. An attractiveand evocative issue. Always popular with collectors. This note has beenprofessionally graded and encapsulated by Paper Money Guaranty as “Gem Uncirculated 65”, with the specialdesignation “EPQ”, and that the note is a “Remainder”. This special designationis noted on the back of the holder as “ExceptionalPaper Quality”. The note is reasonably well-centered, though some varianceis noted in the margins. Scattered, very light toning, especially on the back, is mentioned for accuracy. A few foxing spots can be seen at the left center. Anice, representative example of this popular note. A $5.95 charge will beadded to the winning bid for postage and insurance. If you have any questionsregarding this item, please ask before bidding. Buy or Bid withConfidence – American Coins & Collectibles President Richie Self has worked6 years as a paper money grader/authenticator.
