VINTAGE Rare Colorful Kachina (Katsina or Katsinam) Doll "Eagle" (Kwahu) from the HOPI Tribe

Known as the supernatural spirits of the Hopi, the Kachina dolls embody the spirits of living things and ancestors that have passed and are part of nature. As the Kachina dolls possess powers over nature, they are also seen as guardians of the Hopi Tribe. They can insure human, plant, and animal fertility (everything living).Carved from cottonwood root, each ...Kachina doll resembles a supernatural spirit that is given to a child educating them about the ways of life.
This Kachina was made by Hopi artist, Deloria Adams from First Mesa, Arizona.Measures approximately 14-1/2" (H) and 12" (W).
Absolutely beautiful, hand carved, and painted!The bottom is signed by artist "D. Adams" which stands for Deloria Adams - and the name of this kachina doll is "Eagle" (Hopi name Kwahu).
Deloria Adams is one of the few female Kachina carvers; and a larger sized Kachina like this one carved by a female artist is even more uncommon.The Hopi Tribe were the original Kachina Doll carvers, using a single piece of cottonwood root. Excellent Condition. Description: The Eagle or Kwahu appears in the Kiva Dances in March, or during the Powamu Ceremony. His dance resembles the eagle's motion of flight. The dance is also a prayer for more eagles. Each dancer is pressured to imitate every step and cry of the eagle to absolute perfection. Eagles are honored guests among the Hopis and they are given gifts just as the Hopi children are. At midsummer, they are ceremonially smothered and plucked of all their plumage. Birds have always played an important role in the Hopi ceremonies and tradition.
It is essential to the Hopi Tribe to preserve harmony with the world they live in new and old.
