According to historians, during a cavalry attack it was standard army procedurefor soldiers to ride hard toward the Indians’ horse and livestock herds, firingtheir guns in the air in an attempt to stampede them away from the enemy’scamp. Remington completed the clay model in November 1908, and by the secondweek of the month the plaster version had been completed in the artist’s studioand sent to the Roman Bronze Works foundry.
On November 11, Remington noted in his diary: “Went over to Greenpoint andworked all day completing Trooper. [A] very fine figure.” Remington paidextremely close attention to the post-Civil War military fashion and hardware, which was one of his favorite subjects. It is100% American bronze. Cast in the traditional "Lost Wax Process" withmagnificent patina finishes that are hand-applied highlights that createnatural variations in texture and color and then hand-rubbed to bring out theawesome detail and highlights. This renders that no two statues are exactlyalike.
