Though today the electric car is experiencing a resurgence, it’s easy to forget that electric automobiles were popula...r more than a century ago. As “horseless carriages” became more practical in the late 1800s, steam, electric batteries and gasoline all vied for supremacy as a power source. Electric cars were quieter and easier to start, but had a top speed of 20 mph and a range of only about 50 miles. By 1900, electric cars made up one third of cars on the road in the United States and were driven almost exclusively by women. At the time, many considered women incapable of the necessary physical exertion to drive a gasoline-powered car. The electric car’s moderate speed and short range were considered a bonus for some men, who might not want their wives or daughters to go too far or too fast. Bolstered by improved roads and the need for greater range, gasoline became the fuel of the future. By the 1920s, the electric car’s heyday had passed, and the industry effectively vanished.Source: South Bend Tribune
A description of each item in the listing follows:
1. Booklet - The booklet consists of 23 pages of price lists for the Milburn Light Electric Model 22 Automobile. Five of those pages are illustrations featuring the different parts of the auto. The original owner of the booklet wrote his car on the cover because when ordering parts the customer had to include the number of the car along with the number of whatever part they wanted to order. The booklet measures 9" x 6" and is in lovely condition with only a bit of foxing on the edges of the first page.
2. Ad - This is an ad for the Milburn Light Electric Brougham automobile which cost a whopping $1, 685.00! The original owner had placed this ad inside and I found it while looking through the booklet. On the back he had written a list of parts and part numbers for two different cars. One list was for part for Car #23502 and the other list is for Car #215367. He must have been fairly well off to be able to afford TWO cars! The ad lists G. Luther Brown as the Agent, Arkansas City, Kansas. The ad measures 8 1/2" x 5 1/2" and is in lovely condition with only a crease on the bottom left corner.
This is a really interesting and eye-opening Milburn Light Electric Parts Price Booklet. Who knew Electric Cars were so popular over 100 years ago?! These two items will be a fine addition to any collection of Automobile and Paper Memorabilia.
