The Song Dynasty was a relatively rich time in Chinese history and relatively calm although conflict with the Tartars and Mongols continued. In AD 1127 the northern provinces were lost to them and the capital had to be moved from K'ai-feng Fu (Pien-liang) in the north to Lin-an Fu (Hangchou) in the south. We now refer to the period before the move as the Northern Song and after the move as Southern So...ng.
There were only nine Emperors but they used dozens of reign titles and many different inscription and calligraphy variations which defined dates and mints. If all the variations were catalogued, they would number in the thousands. Unfortunately the key to understanding them no longer exists. Coins were cast in Iron and 2, 3, 5 and 10 cash coins were issued. Trade was flourishing and coins have been found all along East Asian trade routes. Song coins generally was a continuation of the Tang style weighing roughly an average of 3.5 grams to 4 grams. A popular coin series which has a lot of varieties to collect.
