Medal with a Paulonia flower suspension, independent ribbon and its original rosette.
The medal has a red glass cabochon ie is a gemstone which has been shaped and polished.
The cabochon represents the Japanese flag.
The cabochon is surrounded by 32 white enameled rays forming 8 points.
The rays are suspended from a paulonia... crest of green leaves and purple flowers.
On the reverse design of the paulonia leaves lack the veining of the front ones and are inscribed with four seal characters meaning order of merit decoration.
This is Japans first national decoration ("Kyokujitsusho")esta 1875.It is an order of merit.The Order of the Rising Sun could be awarded to either military or civilian personnel for meritorious service. There were eight classes to this order.
