Vintage 1940s Picnic Set Warren Suitcase Green Plates Cups, Bakelite Flatware
Item History & Price
We have to offer a vintage 1940s suitcase-style picnic set. It is a service for 4 (with one cup missing).
This set was made by Warren, with the company logo on the front lock. The original suitcase keys are included. (See photos #3 and #4 for the Warren logo and keys.)
The picnic utensils include 4 Green Melamine Plates and 3 Green Melamine Cups; these are marked "Bellware Beatle" N219 Bell Mfg. Co, Boston USA. There are 4 forks and 4 knives wi...th Gold/Green Bakelite handles and four stainless steel spoons. The spoons may or may not be original. We have seen similar sets in which the spoons do NOT have Bakelite handles and some where they do, so we are not positive that these are (or are not) original. There is a can opener with a Bakelite handle and a pair of aluminum salt and pepper shakers. In the bottom, there is a large tin box, with its lid painted green to match the plates and cups, that is for food storage. We assume that there once was a thermos bottle. The rest of the space in the bottom might have been for fruit or other food that did not need to be in the box.
This picnic set is in very good used, vintage condition--considering its age. A thermos to fit would be easy to find; it might be possible to find an exact-match fourth cup, but very easy to add a different plastic cup. The suitcase is not massively beat up, as some are. It has some wear to its corners and the leather on the bottom seems a bit "stretched" (please see last 3 photos for condition of the exterior). The interior is very clean and the utensils, despite usual wear, are in very good condition.
This picnic set will ship in a box that measures 19" x 19" x 25" and weighs about 16 pounds. Shipping cost will be calculated, depending upon the buyer's US location, and the shipping service that the US buyer selects, of the three we offer for US shipping.
For international buyers, we propose USPS Priority Mail International, and shipping will be in the range of $80 to $100, for UK, Germany, or France, for example. Please message us with your location if you would like a more accurate shipping cost before you purchase.
This set still has both charm and usefulness in it--and it can be fun for local picnics or very handy for car trips.
