Vintage Enameled Copper Magnet Wire, WINSTED Div. HUDSON Wire, 46 (?) Gauge
Item History & Price
Reference Number: Avaluer:1054549 | Brand: Hudson |
For sale is a vintage spool of enameled copper magnet wire, left behind in the electronics supplies of my late father, who was an active and avid HAM radio operator for over 70 years, and a radio, TV, and other electronics serviceman for much of his life. I imagine this wire was for winding coils, as we also found many coil forms in his inventory.
Unfortunately, it is hard to determine exactly what size wire this is, and to determine if any wire had been used.  ...; My husband measured the wire with his micrometer, and it is approximately 0.0015 inches in diameter, but that is with the enamel insulation. We're not sure if the gauge is the number before of after enameling. The markings on the box are very faded, but we can almost see a 46 on the cover under "Size." (Enlarge the photo to see if you can see it.) My husband checked the gauge on the Brown-Sharp list, and it seems likely that this is a match, since made in the USA. British Standard might be #48-49.
The wire is on a vintage, collectible WINSTED aluminum spool, and the spool and wire weigh 5.8 ounces. My husband's best measurement and guess for the weight of the spool would be about 3.2 ounces, leaving approximately 2.5 to 2.6 ounces of wire. That's if the spool is new. (I have found other spools that my father has started, and they are no longer wrapped as nicely as this one!) If anyone has an empty vintage Winsted spool, and knows what the weight is for sure, I would love to know to make this a more accurate listing. Thank you in advance!!
I'm guessing that if you are looking at this posting, you already know a LOT more about this wire than I do. I hope this is wire that you would love to have for your own vintage electronics projects!!
Thanks for looking!!
