Original Description:
This is a Civil War period hard rubber mechanical pencil. The tips are gold and the bottom one retracts and stows the pencil point. It is stamped on the side "Goodyear's Pat. May 6, 51". The pencil is mechanically perfect and the shell is mint. Open it measures 3-3/4" long.
There is an identical example pictured on page 260 of India-Rubber and Gutta-Percha In the Civil War Era by Mike Woshner. I scanned that page and included it here for your convenience.
