Image is in excellent condition with great contrast and detail. This image depicts Rhys M. Thomas when he was a Captain. I've included a picture of Thomas post-war that I found online.
Lt. Col. Rhys M. Thomas, 14th Kentucky Infantry, who later became a U. S. Postal Inspector during the 1880s, left th...e postal service in 1887 and became a Deputy U. S. Marshal in Washington Territory working out of Seattle. After that he returned to the postal service in 1889, and in 1900 - 1901 served as a Postal Inspector in Cuba after the Spanish American war. He mustered in the army 1861 where he served as a private under the command of General James Garfield (future U. S. President Garfield) then mustered out the same year. He then went back to Kentucky and raised a company of 14th Kentuckians and mustered back in as a Captain in 1862, he was promoted to Major in 1863, then Lt. Col. in 1864. He marched with Gen. Sherman to Atlanta and fought in all the battles of that campaign.
