Here we have a Vintage 1930's Era or earlier Sign entitled "CHAMPION COAL" from the Pittsburgh Pa Coal Company Champion Coal. It was coal that was sold by the " City Coal & Supply Co in Pittsburgh in the 1930's era for home heating and also for industrial usage. . Pittsburgh Coal Co. The Pittsburgh Coal Company was a bituminous coal mining company based in Pittsburgh and controlled by the Mellon family (of the Mellon Ba...nk fame and Ligonier Pa. history). In 1945 it merged with Consolidation Coal Company, ( CONSOL) and then controlled by the Rockefeller family. This sign measures 24" long and 13" wide. Very heavy solid steel w/ Blue Slightly Raised Porcelain Lettering. This sign came from a personal collection of my grandfather who worked in the Pittsburgh Area for 41 years including Montour Mine & Hubbard Mine which was located in McKeesport Pa. I belive that his father, also a Western Pa. Coal Miner originally got the sign but not sure since both have passed years ago. It has been stored in a shed out of the weather for years. Wish I knew more as it is really neat!! Overall great condition showing "OUTSTANDING LOGO" as shown. Great Graphic of the "Gladiator"!! Lettering is blue( slightly raised) and sign is yellow with porcelain Letting on steel. Has some rust mainly around the edge mounting holes as shown but consider its age. Would display GREAT for a Coal mining collector or especially a collector of Pittsburgh Memorabilia!!!! Very hard to find from the golden age of coal & steel in Pittsburgh area. Mellon, Henry W. Oliver, and Henry Clay Frick. Although a New Jersey corporation, it operated only in the Pittsburgh area.
