1880-O PCGS Morgan Dollar
VAM-6A Top 100 "8/7 Ear"
Ungraded with code=94=altered surfacesThis is one of the most controversial problem calls from PCGS. It is used on coins that have been dipped or artificially toned. This does not appear to be either. I would not be surprised to find this later in a graded holder, say about MS 62.
The VAM here is an overdate. Unused 1879 obverses were repunched with an 80 over the 79. They range from simple residual checkmarks on the upper loo...p of the second 8 to an obvious 80/79. This is in the middle. There is the checkmark but also the 7 serif artifact seen as an ear out of the upper left of that 8.
The reverse die is confirmed by the break through the wreath berry. The state is 6A rather than (the more common) 6C due to the single clash and less motto letter transfer.
