The new style Jet Pilots Knife was developed in 1957, by the Bureau of Areonautics Weapons Board. The criteria supplied by the Navy was very exacting and tough. The knife had to cut through dense underbrush, be able to drive a nail through a 2 inch board and saw through an Airplane or Helicopter fuselage which required the back spine of the blade to have saw teeth. The sheath had to be leather with a compartment for a sharpening stone . The handle were to be made of compressed le...ather washers.All of the Navy requirements were filled. Now for this particular knife it is a U.S. AIR FORCE issue . The pommel is stamped Ontario..2-80. This knife is in near excellent condition in fact it is one of the best original Pilots knives you will find. The cross-guard is tight, the leather handle is tight and no marks and the top of the pommel is painted black did by the USAF, the original finish still on the blade.
