Original Description:
Collins*** Ace Aviator, Wiley Post ******Dual Cancels including a Specially Obtained Wichita Stamp Show Pictorial******Only 50 Made***ABOUT THIS COVER The feature stamps onthis very, very rarely seen, hand drawn and individually handpainted, dual canceled FDC by Hobby Superstar, Fred Collins are the PO's 1979 Wiley Post 25¢ air-mail stamps,  Scott # C-95 and C-96 . . . with the bottom pair of stamps being accented w...ith the plate number 39197.About the special nature of this FDC : Iscanned a portion of Mr. Collins’ deeply-absorbing 340-page book, which I hardly-ever do, but in this case, I thought it was necessary todo so because of this cover’s extremely elusive nature. ( By theway, if you are a hand painted enthusiast, but have never purchased this book, I highly recommend that you do. After all, it was Mr. Collins who kick-startedthe mainstream hand painted movement in our Hobby. The bookspotlights not only his stellar work during his first 20 years in Hobby Land, but also gives you an in-depth look at so many aspects of his personal life, including his time spent serving his country during the Vietnam War, hisinspirations, his family life, etc. The book can be ordered directly from Fred, himself. ) Anyway, with the exception ofsome of his later 1990s Milford Duck covers, Fred never numbered his cachets, but all of his production numbers, up to, and including, the year 1997, are revealed in thisbook. As you could see, Fred made only 50 of these hardly-ever-seen FDCs. About the inspiration for the feature stamp : probably the most notable aviation achievement in Mr. Post's accomplished career as an ace aviator occurred on July 15, 1933 when he made aviation history's very first solo-flight around the world. This epic achievement started at Brooklyn, New York's Floyd Bennett Air Field, where Post returned after 7 days, 18 hours, and 49 minutes in the air. And make no mistake about it --- this was a most dangerous feat back in the 1930s, when aircraft was nowhere close to be as safely-built as they are today. As a matter of fact, Wiley Post had to stop several times along the way to have his auto-pilot adjusted and even to have his plane's propeller fixed. ( Sadly, at just age 36, Post died during an aerial tour over Alaska, along with his passenger --- and close friend --- the humorist and newspaper writer, Will Rogers. )  About the feature stamps, themselves : the top stamp, Scott C-95, spotlights Post with his famous Lockheed single engine aircraft which was named the Winnie Mae soaring in the background. Next, the bottom stamp, Scott C-96, showcases Post, again, with the Winnie Mae flying overhead, while our aviation hero sits down in a pressurized air suit which he. himself, invented. About the inspiration for the hand painted cachet : actually, Wiley Post began his aerial career in 1924 when he performed aerial stunts in a flying circus, and it seems that Mr. Collins picked up on the early stages of Post's career for his cachet.About the hand drawn, hand painted cachet : on this masterfully designed cachet, Mr. Collins spotlights the young dare-devil, Post, descending from one vintage aircraft . . . the Flying Redskin . . . on to the top wing of another.About the  dual cancels : first off, the bottom cancel . . . from Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, where Wiley Post was buried in Memorial Park Cemetery . . . was the PO's official cancellation site, but it is the top cancel which is this cover's feature draw which was issued in Wichita, Kansas at the 1979 Air Capital Stamp Show . . . . a half-dollar sized circular cancel, which includes a pictorial of Wiley Post's Winnie Mae aircraft. All in all, an epic cover --- designed during Fred sophomore year in Hobby Land --- the likes of which is totally unique in its design . . . and a cover that pops up only "once in a blue moon."
