Antique Victorian SILVER "MIZPAH" RING Hallmarked Birmingham 1881 First Boer War.A lovely antique Mizpah ring dating from 1881, the time of the First Boer War. In a nice heart shaped box from a Bristol Jewellers.First popular in the earlier part of the Victorian era, Mizpah jewelry symbolized what so much jewelry still means today - a bond of love between two people.
Mentioned in the Bible, Mizpah is a Hebrew word that has come to connote an emotional bond between two people. M...izpah jewelry generally was exchanged between two people who were lovers or close friends and might be separated from each other for some amount of time.
Mizpah jewelry first came about in the 1850s and 1860s during the Victoria era and was popular through the 1880s to the First World War.Hallmarked with a makers mark "W.G" for William Gough of The Parade, Birmingham.Also a Birmingham anchor hallmark, a lion for .925 sterling silver & a date letter, Old English lower case "g" for 1881. Internal diameter of the ring is approx. 19.6mm which makes it a size T.Great collectors item in excellent condition.
