Rare Victorian Soup Tureen 1859 Elkington & Co Silverplated Tureen Elkington & Co is one of the most important names in English silver and the most important name in silverplate. They began in Birmingham as silversmiths in 1836. By 1838 they had discovered and patented a new way to electroplate. Elkington participated in the Metalware section of the 1851 Great Exh...ibition held in Hyde Park in London. Domed oval lid with scalopped edges and small cutout in edge for ladle. Oval boat-shaped body with arched loop handles and finial. Tureens are among the rarer forms made in silver before the Victorian period. Large tureens like this one were made to hold soup.Size: 14 inches wide including handle and 12 inches tall.
