Weigand***American Turners ***a 100 Year Anniversary FDC ABOUT THIS COVER The featurestampon this hand drawn and hand painted FDC by Mae Weigand isthe PO's 1948 100 Year Anniversary of the American TurnersSociety 3¢ stamp, Scott # 948.About theinspiration for the feature stamp : it was in 1848 . . . and, hence, this cover's statusas a 100 Year Anniversary FDC . . . when a group ofGerman immigra...nts founded the American Turners Society, an organization whoseparamount focus was the issue of Good Health, both for individuals and fortheir new nation. To this end, they promoted exercise, and also becameinvolved in the military ( many of them served during theCivil War, on the side of the Union ) and even on thepolitical scene, most notably with their endorsement in 1859 of theRepublican-running candidate, Abraham Lincoln ( they even served as his bodyguard at both Lincoln's inauguration, as well as at his funeral procession. ) Though their ranks, in greatpart, have physically disappeared over the decades, their legacy of soundhealth for both Self and Country certainly lives on today. About thefeature stamp, itself : this attractive pinkish-redstamp features the words 100 Year Anniversary of the AmericanTurner --- a Century of Health. The central image on the stamp promotes the concept ofGood Health with its portrayal of an ancient Greek discus thrower as he windsback before making his toss ( the same discus throwerdisplayed on the PO's 1995 Centennial of the Modern Olympic Games stamp, Scott# 3087 ). And, finally, directly above the discus thrower is the ancient Greektorch, which was emblematic of the start of the ancient Olympic Games. About thehand painted cachet : on this expertly hand drawn and attractively handpainted cachet, Ms. Weigand spotlights an American Turner badge with itsmotto, Strong Mind, Strong Body. And though its somewhatsubtle, also worthy of mention, I think, is the light pink hues surrounding theTurner badge, a hue which so well complements the colorful shadings on thefeature stamp.About thiscover overall condition : since this cover was designedon a 71 year old envelope, let's take a look at its overall conditiontogether. First off, the envelope's 4 corners, though notneedle-point sharp, are, nevertheless well-defined for a cover fromthis era. Secondly, although there is an ever-so-slight crease markat the top left, as seen on the first scanned image, the remainder of theenvelope is free of all creases, tears, and things of that nature . Third, the cover is virtually clean. Fourth, the cover is virtually flap-markfree. I used the word "virtually" because there are very, very faint diagonal flap mark on the cover's flip-side ( so faint, in fact, that Iwould rate them a 1 on a scale of 1 to 10, with 1 being the lightestflap mark possible ). And finally, the envelope'sactual flap is unsealed, with its original glue still intact. All in all, a very attractivelydesigned piece of work --- and one of the lesser-seen ofall Weigand covers. .
