Harnell was formed in approximately 1946 by John Harrington. The name Harnell was created by combining t...he Har in Harrington and nell from the last name of Harrington's good friend and partner, Lavern Rennells.
Harrington was born in 1901 on the Choctaw Nation Indian Reservation in Oklahoma. His family migrated west and by 1921 he was working resurfacing roads for the State of California Highway Department. This led him to work on the Boulder Dam project and by 1940 he had moved to Santa Monica, California, and joined Douglas Aircraft as a tooling advisor. Harrington was transferred by Douglas to Chicago during WW II to work on the setup of O'Hare Field. He built his first casting rod in 1945 using square weave fiberglass for airplanes and casting glue. It was not an overly good rod given the fact that the fiberglass and resins were not designed for that use, but it gave him a start in fiberglass rod making. Following the war, her returned to Santa Monica with Douglas, but soon left to start Harnell. By the middle of 1945, he had perfected making commercial fiberglass tubular rod blanks and by 1946, he and Rennells were actively selling large volumes of blanks.
Harrington's first shop was opened in Santa Monica in a building above MRM Enamelers. He used their oven at night to cure his rods as he experimented with his designs. Harrington's wife of 38 years, Jean, still has the notebooks he used to record his original design work. She also has some of his original mandrels which he made himself on a lathe -- 1/4 inch at a time. In the early days, Ted Thal who had a distributorship for Owens Corning Glass helped him get the necessary glass cloth weaves and resins necessary to build rods. Harrington also invented one of the first rod rolling tables and one of the first fiberglass impregnators.
Harnell made both blanks and finished rods and its first 15 models of rods were bass rods since Harrington was an avid bass fisherman. Harnell quickly became successful and Harrington began to re-focus his personal fishing time on big-game saltwater fishing, catching 763 marlin and sailfish on the boats in Matazlan and Lapaz, Mexico over a 13 year span. Some of the footage from a film he shot off Mazatlan, Mexico, was used in the movie The Old Man and the Sea.
Over the years, Harnell built boat roads, surf rods, spinning rods, casting rods and fly rods. Harnell rods are easy to identify as they have a gleaming black finish on them. The 1956 catalog is typical of Harnell work and contained information on 75 rod models that it was making. The catalog notes that in the nine years since it had been in existence Harnell had sold in excess of 1, 500, 000 rods. Harnell also noted that although spinning tackle had taken the limelight in recent years, it was still were making a series of fly rods..
