Original Description:
You are buying ONE (1) brass and steel padlock AND KEY, quite heavy, marked TRIUMPH in script on both sides..If you go to the Triumph Motorcycle Logo site (TheBullitt) you will see that this style script TRIUMPH was used from 1907-1914.
The first model to wear a Triumph tank emblem in America was made by Excelsior in 1907. It was powered by a 2 1/2 horsepower 300-cc Thor single, and it was designed by Hendee (makers of Indian) and made by the Aurora Automatic Machinery Co.
...The second pic shows a full page ad (p. 34) from Motorcycle Illustrated, Vol. 7, July-December 1912, with the same script TRIUMPH logo. (this and other issues of Motorcycle Illustrated are available on the web from the hathitrust org site. This ad is for the TRIUMPH Motocycle (no R) in Detroit MI. None of these motocycles are known to survive today.
Triumph of Chicago and Detroit was in existence from 1908-1912. In 1908, an investment group in Detroit purchased the rights to the Triumph name from Excelsior, and founded the Triumph Mfg Co. They made three different models (A, B, C) of 550cc machines, and produced 1500 motorcycles in their two year existence. The last pic shows the 1912 Triumph motorcycle (2 1/2 HP).
The last logo pic shows the logo for the Triumph Motor Co. which made cars under this name beginning in 1930. This company evolved from the Triumph Cycle Co. so the logo is the same for both car and motorcycle.
Please note that there was a TRIUMPH Safe and Lock Co. Connersville IN but they have a very different block letter logo. There was also an Excelsior "Triumph" model bicycle. Because Excelsior made some famous motorcycles in the 1920s this could be confusing but the Excelsior Triumph logo is block letters in an art nouveau style.
I do not know who made this lock for Triumph.
From the web:"The Detroit Free Press of July 21st, 1913contains a large advertisement by the Excelsior Autocycle Co., of that city, which is headed by Harry Svensgard, formerly one of the principal Excelsiortravelers. In this advertisement appears a large illustration of the Triumphmotocycle, and an announcement that Svensgard has taken the exclusive salesagency for that machine in Detroit and vicinity, with reasons therefor.Svensgard says that he has been in the bicycle and motocyclebusiness for more than fifteen years, and knows both businesses from the groundfloor up and can tell a good machine when he sees it; that, nevertheless, he“lived for weeks” in the Triumph plant, studying it from raw material tofinished product, and testing it under all sorts of conditions; and that thefact of his placing an unconditional order for 500 of the1913 models is thebest evidence of how well the machine and the factory have met hisexpectations. The Triumph is a chain-drive and is made in single speed andtwo-speed models, developing full 5 1/2 horse power on the single speed andmore than 10 horsepower on the low gear. With these features and the “No jolt”seat, and the endorsement of such experts as Svensgard, it should be worthy theattention of any present or prospective dealer. The lines of the machine areexcellent."
