Very rare antique vintage Chinese celestial (star constellation)globe for navigation in brass , wooden , dovetail jointed chinesebox.globe ~220mm diameter , box ~280mm cube.This was purchased after many negotiations and return visits , from astreet seller in Qingdao, NE China in 1990.(Much of the Chinese Naval fleet used Qingdao port as a base)
The reluctant seller indicated it was a very old 'navy surplus' piece andthere was some evidence to support t...his . Excellent construction box, fittingetc (fitting are provided but not shown here)The material suggests it was made ~1920-1940 , but only an expert couldreally tell . Definitely not a reproduction or tourist piece.This is a very rare piece -unlikely to see anything similar again , atleast never seen again in my 20+ years on living in Asia . Very good condition-although exterior of box could do with a new wax coating.
