Known as a kiri-kodansu (small personal tansu chest), this tansu chest was made of solid paulownia kiri wood over 100 years ago in the early Taisho Era (c. 1915). The kiri-kodansu was a special chest used to store one's personal accessories as well as money, documents and other valuables. This tansu chest is made of solid kiri (paulownia) wood and hardened hinoki wood peg construction (see last picture). All the hardware is made of hand... forged and tooled copper with a nice aged patina.This tansu chest has total of six drawers of various sizes as well as two removable sliding doors (see pictures 8 & 9), The large drawer as well as the doors have operable locks with key (see pictures 10 & 11). All drawers and doors slide easily without binding.This chest has a century old original warm aged patina. Having been used lovingly over the centuries, it remains in fine original antique condition and should serve one well for another century of use. It measures 24" wide by 19" high by 12" deep (60 x 48 x 31 cm).
