Though today the electric car is experiencing a resurgence, it’s easy to forget that electric automobiles were popular more than a century ago. As “horseless carriages” became more practical in the late 1800s, steam, electric batteries and gasoline all vied for supremacy as a power sour...ce. Electric cars were quieter and easier to start, but had a top speed of 20 mph and a range of only about 50 miles. By 1900, electric cars made up one third of cars on the road in the United States and were driven almost exclusively by women. At the time, many considered women incapable of the necessary physical exertion to drive a gasoline-powered car. The electric car’s moderate speed and short range were considered a bonus for some men, who might not want their wives or daughters to go too far or too fast. Bolstered by improved roads and the need for greater range, gasoline became the fuel of the future. By the 1920s, the electric car’s heyday had passed, and the industry effectively vanished.Source: South Bend Tribune
A description of each item in the listing follows:
1. Milburn Light Electric Brougham (Larger brochure) - This is a tri-fold brochure. The front bears the image of 3 people inside a Milburn Light Electric Brougham Automobile while a woman and child are walking toward them. It opens to show a man carrying a bushel basket of fruit out to a Brougham containing a woman and another bushel basket of fruit. The wording lets us know that "In the Milburn alone there is room to carry a large basket or crate." The brochure then opens to reveal a green Milburn Light Electric Brougham auto and it describes what a simple and light and safe car it is to drive. The back gives us all the info on greatness if the Milburn Electric and how roomy & luxurious it is.
There is a streak of tanning on the back page as seen in the 6th photo and there are a couple of "ghost" images on the inside where it was folded, as you can see in the 6th photo.
The brochure measures 9" x 4" when closed and unfolds to 12" x 9" when opened.
2. Smaller Milburn Light Electric Brochure - This brochure folds into a 4-way. The front features a man approaching a car with 2 passengers inside. The brochure opens revealing a woman inside a Milburn Light Electric auto saying, "Come on - get in - I've plenty of room". We are told to look inside to see how there is room for more passengers without increasing the size or weight of the car with the practical new seating arrangement. The brochure opens again to reveal the seating arrangement for two passengers in the rear seat and the seating arrangement for three passengers in the rear seat. It opens again to show the Convertible Seating for both 2 and 3 passengers in the rear seat using staggered seating. It then goes on to explain this along with the 2 disappearing front seats.
There is some foxing along the top on one side as seen in the last photo. This brochure measures 6 1/4" x 3 1/2" when closed and 14" x 11" when opened.
These are two really interesting and eye-opening Milburn Light Electric Automobile Brochures. Who knew Electric Cars were so popular over 100 years ago?! These two items will be a fine addition to any collection of Automobile and Paper Memorabilia.
