Eight additional cup matches have been held since 1987. The most recentmatch was held in 2013 in San Francisco Bay when the U S A yacht ORACLE wasdeclared the winner. In 2017 the race will be held in the waters around Bermuda with the U S team being the defender and the Royal New Zealand Yacht Club’s entry as the challenger.
AMERICAS CUP HISTORYThe America’s Cup history dates back to 1851when the America’s Cup trophy was originally awarded for a race around the Isle of Wight inEngland. The first race was won by the schoonerAMERICA. Over the years’ contestswere held every four years with the United States yachts claiming theprestigious cup in each event until 1983. The trophy was held by the New York Yacht Club from 1857until 1983 when the Cup was won by the Royal Perth Yacht Club, represented by the yacht Australia II, ending the longest winning streak in thehistory of sport.
