Framed TLS, one page, 8.25 x 10.5, Kansas City Star letterhead, May 15, 1918. Letterto Edward A. Greene in Newark, in full: "Ithink you should give the name of any man responsible for such an infamousfalsehood. Please show him this letter. Either he knows nothing of the casewhatever, in which event he had no business to speak, or he knows that the Navywas more than doubled in size during my administration, and considerably morethan quadrupled in efficiency. If he will tu...rn to my special message of April13th, 1908, or to the message of the preceding December, he will find the factsprecisely set forth, or you can turn to my Autobiography. The Navy did notbegin to go back until the Democrats gained control of the lower House in 1910, when they at once stopped appropriations for it. It was at its lowest pointafter the first two years of Mr. Wilson's term, during the period preceding andimmediately succeeding the outbreak of the great war. Let me repeat that yourfriend was stating what he must have known to be an untruth."
At theconclusion, Roosevelt hand writes: "In my recently published PrincetonLectures, and in Charles Washburn's book about me, the facts are fully setforth." In very good to fine condition, with a small fold split, a shorttear to the top edge, and a light block of toning from prior display. Desirablenaval content from the president who famously sent the Navy's 'Great WhiteFleet' on a world tour to project America's power around the globe.
