Antique DUNLAP & CO. TOPHat ~ Burkhardt Bros. Co ~ Silk & LeatherAnantique silk and leather top hat. The piece was constructed by the Dunlap &Co. with a cream satin interior with a leather band. The exterior is rick blacksilk (beaver ?) and covers the cardboardlike material. The piece is marked “Extra Quality, Trade Mark Dunlap & Co.N Y Reg U.S. Pat. Office Burkhardt Bros. Co. Cincinnati. And Indianapolis.” tothe inside. Includes original cardboard outer... protection cover.
Dimensions:6 ½ “ top to bottom; 11 ½ “ L x 10 W; 5 ½ top hat, Size: 22” inside – 7 to 7 1/8 = MItemType: Vintage, Antique or Pre-ownedConditionNotes: Excellent - Minor wear consistentwith age and history – leather band has separated and is held in place by tape.Styles: VictorianMaterials:Leather Silk – probably beaver, but not 100% certain.TRIVIA:
From the 1895-1905 period. Thiswould have been a very high end hat in its' day and would have sold for about$8.00 during that period. That was nearly a weeks' salary for the averageworking man. Robert Dunlap received hisfirst job at the age of 12 in 1857 as a general office boy for Charles Knox ofKnox Hats in New York. Soon the boy graduated to the ranks of the hat salesmen, and several years later was still selling Knox hats, his salary having risen to$12 weekly. Ambitious, he asked for $15, and when Knox refused the raise theangry, Dunlap left to start his own business. Thus began the famed Dunlap hatcompany, founded by a onetime Knox errand boy. By the late 1890's Dunlap Hatswas known for the quality of its high end “formal” hats, such as top hats andbowlers. In deed, Dunlap succeeded in turning out the blackest derbies everknown, the Dunlap hat eventually outsold the Knox in Manhattan. For many a yearsmall hat-makers held up their spring lines until they could see and imitatethe Dunlap derby and the Knox felt.
