Chinese Neolithic Majiayao Yangshao Culture, Machang C. 2300 - 2000 BC Large Jar
Item History & Price
The Majiayao Culture or Gansu-Yangshao Culture lasted for over a thousand years from 3300 to 2000 B.C. along the upper Yellow River in Ancient China, in what is now the eastern Gansu province and neighboring areas. That culture is divided into phases the last of which lasted for only a few hundred years, the Machang Phase, but which produced a remarkable... body of Ancient Art, recognizable worldwide.
This form of this vessel is typical of their two handled large pottery storage jars (or vase or amphora); the 'loop' or 'ring' type handles below the waist is typical for this type as well. On some storage jars such as this one - especially in this comparative size, the scale of this at approximately 9" in width by 8.25" in height - the neck is elongated, as seen here. Also on some examples there is a 'lobe' or lug' at the top rim, either singly or not, as seen here. Unusually, on this one the loop type handles are offset from center. The technical skill of the ancient potter who made this is laudable; thin-walled and very high-fired, there is a nice 'ring' to the lip when tapped. The artwork is very pleasing on this one, as some seen appear rather naive' by comparison. Nice size. Approximately 9" wide by 8.25" in height.
