The poster was commissioned by Sports Illustrated as a promotional item for the upcoming 1955 race. It was not available for sale to the public and was used to promote ticket sales for the race. Nobody imagined how th...e race would go...
The 1955 Le Mans disaster occurred during the 24 Hours of Le Mans motor race at Circuit de la Sarthe in Le Mans, France on June 11, 1955. A major crash on the track caused large fragments of debris to fly into the crowd, killing 83 spectators and French driver Pierre Bouillin and injuring nearly 180 more. It was the most catastrophic crash in motorsport history, and it prompted Mercedes-Benz to retire from motor racing until 1989. It was a traumatic event for the sport which has had long-lasting effects on the sport forever...not the least of which was the development of protective netting to shield the crowds from debris during crashes.
Condition is very good - there are small edge tears, appropriate for the age of the poster. The paper is mildly curved from being in a roll for the last 60+ years; the paper is in fantastic condition – the paper relaxed nicely just by resting it flat for a few days. Colors are bright, vivid, and intact. This poster could easily be mint condition with little work.
The poster was found in a cache of 1950s and 1960s posters in an old estate, protected from light and moisture since being placed into a closet, decades ago. It looks fantastic!
