Elgin American Made Vintage Black Knight Hand - Winding Gold - Filled Watch
Item History & Price
Although the watch dates to 1950s it is in a fantastic cosmetic condition. These "Knight" watches were highly desired and are iconic of the great designs that Elgin produced. The Elgin Watch Company dates back to the 19th Century and made very high quality and innovative watches and movements through the 1960's in Elgin Illinois. Ultimately, various trade pressures caus...ed the company to relocate, the close and ultimately to be sold off. Elgin is truly a lost treasure of American manufacturing.
This watch is in excellent cosmetic condition. You will be very hard pressed to find another of these in better shape. The case has only very minor signs of wear, and there is no wear-through on the gold-filled case. Indeed the tips at the top of the highly styled lugs are often worn through on most examples, but this one looks great. See the pictures to assess for yourself. The case measures 28 mm across and has a length of 40mm, which was a good men's size in the 1950s and has an fine vintage look on men's wrists today.
This watch is powered by the dependable 21 jewel high grade Elgin cal. 680. While the movement does not have fancy decoration, the finishing and precision of all the pieces is superb. The movement is not running, but looks completely pristine. The balance wheel spins freely. Based on the overall condition of the watch and the working balance wheel, is watch probably just needs a regular service and cleaning to run.
I placed this watch on a new leather men's band. It is a generic band, but matches the dressy watch very well.
Super low starting bit for this piece of American Watch-making history.
