ANTIQUE BURMESE SILVER SERVING DISH, ZODIAC, PIERCED BORDER, LATE 19TH CENTURY
This lovely silver serving platter, or dish, is of European form with Burmese ornamentation and was made in Rangoon, Burma during the late 19th century. The orna...mentation is fine and many different silver making techniques have been used to fashion and embellish the dish.
The dish is of oval shape with a steep side leading up from the base to the very wide and elaborate rim. The interior of the base of the bowl has been ornamented with simple narrow geometric borders and a much wider border of repousse and chased scrolling vegetation around the central, plain silver oval-shaped cartouche. The ornamentation of these borders is typically Burmese, the elements are well defined and they have been carefully crafted with skill and precision. The wide vegetal border is complex and sinuous, showing great artistry.
The rim is extremely impressive: there are twenty-four arch-shaped scallops to the perimeter and twelve repousse and chased figural plaques to the rim, each containing a sign of the zodiac. Each plaque has been contained by arched borders to the top and bottom, a style associated with silver made in Rangoon and frequently seen in bowls from that region. The plaques have been separated by a stylised silver flower and the metal around the plaques has been laboriously hand-pierced, so that only a delicate tracery remains. The figures are three dimensional and highly detailed. The background has also been finely textured with a small punched triple dot motif appearing at intervals, almost as a ‘wallpaper’ behind the figures.
This wonderful antique Burmese silver serving dish appears to have had little, if any, use. The maker has used great skill, artistry and a wide range of techniques to create this. A fantastic example of 19th century Burmese silverwork!
