Item History & Price
FIGURATIVE IMAGERY FEATURING:16 dogs, 3 horses with Empress/Princess/Dutchess rider & 2 male ri...ders/chaperones/escorts with long fox horns.
DESCRIPTION:The plate's depicted figuration on this magnificent late 19th-early 20th century Chinese export porcelain dish is absolutely superlative, featuring what appears to be a blond or red-headed female horseback rider, with long period dress, wearing a hat and holding a whip, who's most likely a woman of means, holding a royal title and presumably a princess or dutchess. She is accompanied by two male chaperones or escorts on horses, both wearing period long coats, hats and black leather riding boots. Each male rider is blowing what appear to be fox horns. The plate has a fancy scalloped outer edge and is decorated with a deep prussian blue band of color, overlayed with an ornate floral motif, circumnavigating the outer boundaries of the plate, realized in gold and gilt slip glaze. The figuration is highly detailed and artistically very accomplished. Not only is the depiction of people well done but so are the multiple depictions of hunting dogs and the horses taking the riders along their hunt. The draughtsmanship demonstrates experience and a real adeptness at rendering human and natural forms. The dogs and horses are simply fantastic and even the varied expressions of the riders is sensitively captured. The red ink stamped Qianlong seal is within the kiln-fired white glaze of the interior basin of the base plate, surrounded by a circular raised cleat. There are still four old green felt pads on the raised foot, protecting the plate and the surfaces it came into contact with and more importantly, signifying that this was a decorative plate and not entered into everyday service, thus explaining the excellent, pristine, nearly immaculate condition of the plate. Wonderful.
CONDITION:Excellent overall antique condition. There are no flea-bites to any of its edges, significant scuffs or abrasions to its interior basin. The porcelain is still glossy and reflective and the graphic iconography is undisturbed. A magnificent turn-of-the-century, late 19th to early 20th century Chinese export figurative porcelain plate, manufactured for the international marketplace. Extraordinary.
