Here we offer a truly excellent condition Model 1840 Musicians Swords made by the famous firm of Ames. The hilt is brass mounted of regulation pattern. The grip is solid brass made to look like twisted wire. The straight single-edged blade is in near pristine condition. Interesting note this sword used as a trusting weapon could be very effective , much more the the model 1860 Staff & field Officers. The obverse ricasso is stamped " US / JF (for the inspector ) / 1865 " the reverse... has the stamp of " Ames Mfg Co / CHICOPEE / Mass . This stamp is faint , but then this is common for Ames swords. It is complete with its black leather scabbard , the leather being very solid . There are two brass mounts the top locket and the bottom chape. The chape shows several dents , this is normal for brass is a soft metal and the bottom gets the brunt of the smacks and wear from use. It is important to note the Musicians were rather useful in battle for there were no cell phones or walkie talkies at this time so the Music directed the troop movements over the din of battle.
