Vintage Sterling Hopi Crafts Hair Ornament Fastener & Pin Geometric Design

Up for auction is a vintage piece of Hopi Silver fashioned into a hair ornament for use with a pony tail or braid. It is marked for identification with a chiseled: hc for Hopi Crafts (dating the craft period some point 1962-83) and is made of sterling grade silver; it weighs 27.19 g. It is overlay construction with a geometric design, the recessed surfaces has fine line chase work and the outer portion retains a soft gleaming smooth surface; the 2" key top wire pin has a short segment ...safety chain (with oxidation) and the pin itself has a slight arch and is fitted in small drillings by tension by slipping it pin through the drillings and turning the little loop, it kind of tightens up. The holder is c-shaped measuring 1 1/8" at the center and tapers to 9/16" at terminals and the drills (for pin) are placed about 1/2 way through the tapered body. When engaged the clip will hold about 2 fingers of hair...remember this piece is over 3/4 ozt so if you use it in a braid just weave the pin through the braid (to alleviate the weight) and in a pony tail situation, first use a covered elastic tie and use that as a base to anchor the pin to support the weight of the piece, you know just weave through that and the holder will not pull the hair. I have found either of these two ways comfortable for wear. Based on the mark it is 36-57 years old (I'd guess closer to 36-40 years), an scarcer hair ornament form by this tribe - I've seen the barrettes but I can't say I've come across a pony tail holder before (yes on Navajo holders but not Hopi holders) although I am sure they are out there. This holder is in minty condition with a well balanced and expertly crafted design...the little pin has distortion/curvature (superficial) all from wear and use and the connecting chain may need a light rub with a polishing cloth. Neat piece for wear or to add to a Collection of Hopi Craft Jewels. Any interest?
