Offered here is a very rare and special group of 8 WWI Chinese 'trench art' watercolours painted on both sides of 4 large cardboard panels. The watercolours depict traditional Chinese proverbs and scenes with accompanying calligraphic inscriptions and were painted by a member of the Chinese Labour Corps working on the airfield at Dunkirk in the spring/summer of 1918 and were used to decorate the hut occupied by Lt Robert Moyes Adam (1885-1967) of 27 Squadron RAF (bomber/reconnais...sance).Robert Moyes Adam was himself an artist and a photographer of some renown who was later official artist of the Royal Botanical Society of Edinburgh. His huge archive of negatives is split between the RBSE and the University of St. Andrews. He had joined the Royal Garrison Artillery as a bombardier but then transferred to the Royal Flying Corps achieving the rank of lieutenant and serving as a front line aerial reconnaissance photographer.The panels each measure 24" x 10" (61cm x 25.4cm) and turned up at a Scottish estate sale wrapped in brown paper inscribed with their provenance.(The last 2 photos were downloaded from the internet and are not included in this sale. They are shown here for information only.)The panels have drawing pin holes at top and bottom and have age related discolouration/grime from long term storage. Condition otherwise as per my photos and offered here with a low price start and no reserve.The height of these panels exceeds the limits for the inexpensive Airmail Small Packet service. If a couple of centimeters were cut off the bottom of each one, overseas shipping could be massively reduced to around £15 for Europe and £22.50 for the rest of the world. Similarly UK postage could be reduced to £7.
