Rare 1976 Alexander Calder Lithograph Braniff Airlines 33x23 & Letter From CEO
Item History & Price
As Braniff's participation in the celebration of the 200th birthday of the United States, famed American sculptor and artist, Alexander Calder, was commissioned to pain the exterior of the flagship 727 fleet in a patriotic design. His salute to the Bicentennial was an abstract painting of the red, white and blue of the Nation's flag as it waves. Christened "Flying Colors of the United States" in ...ceremonies, it visited all Braniff mainland United States cities in regular service as an impressive visual symbol of the Bicentennial.
Calder wanted everyone at Braniff to know how pleased he was that this airline not only made the tribute possible but had the spirit to carry it out, and so he pained a commemorative gouache especially for Braniff employees. It was reproduced as a collector's lithograph on Teton paper. Calder signed in the plate prior to lithographing. It was not sold in stores and was not made available to anyone who was not connected with Braniff.
This is one of those limited lithographs complete with the letter that accompanied each lithograph that was sent to Braniff employees. It is very rare and especially in this condition and even more so with the letter.
Texas residents will pay an 8.25% sales tax.
