Today we are delighted to offer for sale a wonderful and rare Imperial Russian Pavel Ovchinnikov silver cup holder! Pavel Ovchinnikov (1830-1888) was one of the Russian jewelry protagonist of the middle XIX century. Among the goldsmith art industry pioneers, he led the most important Russian society for the manufacture of precious metals, he introduced the specialist education for his workers and brought prestige to the enamel technique. Ovchinnikov supplied jewelry and objets de vertu to many Royal and Imperial courts of Europe. This fabulous silver tea glass holder dates to pre-revolutionary Imperial Russia and is hallmarked for the year 1883. For more than 200 years, tea glass holders were considered essential in many Russian households. After all, Russia was one of the world's main tea consumers. Having started off as an ingenious tool to avoid touching a hot glass, the podstakannik (as it is known in Russia) soon evolved into an elitist tableware item. Precious metals, filigree design, and exquisite enamel painting suddenly became apt in cases of works intended for aristocracy. This intricately and expertly crafted and detailed podstakannik is crafted of 84 Zolotniki Silver which is .875 silver. The cup features a round body supported by four ball feet, with an ear-shaped handle with top flat thumb rest. The body of the holder features extensive repousse designs, with geometrical Renaissance-inspired arabesque panels framing a central scene depicting a bucolic and pastoral farming family happily carrying freshly-picked produce down a country road. The piece is hallmarked on the bottom with П.Овчинниковъ and other Russian hallmarks. Item presents well and is in very good antique as-found condition, with minor surface wear, tarnishing and patina commensurate with age. There are minor distortions to ball feet and handle as expected from use.
