A rare Arts and Crafts repousse, hand planished copper panel showing in the foreground a young woman wearing a long dress or habit and head covering, carrying a basket from which she is feeding chickens, in the background are two typically stylised trees.
Whilst it is highly unusual to find a decorative copper panel from this period depicting a human figure, the subject matter is very typical of the ethos of the Arts and Crafts movement, offering as it does a rather bucolic vision o...f country life, without any encroaching signs of industrialisation. The girl herself has a serene, almost Pre-Raphaelite quality and the image as a whole is somewhat reminiscent of the work of artist/designers such as Charles Voysey and Walter Crane (see particularly Voysey's "Head, Hand and Heart").
This piece is unmarked but almost certainly stems from one of the many handicraft and metalworking guilds that were established during the late 19th and early 20th centuries by exponents of the Arts and Crafts movement. A strong contender might be Charles Ashbee's Guild of Handicrafts as both the trees and the chickens strongly suggest the influence of John Pearson, co founder and metalwork teacher at the guild.
The panel was clearly originally mounted in a frame or possibly on a piece of furniture as there are small holes just inside the rim, 3 at the top and 3 at the bottom. It measures 34.3 cm (13.5 inches) by 20 cm (approx 8 inches).
I have chosen not to overclean this piece as I believe the patina of age is intrinsic to the interest of antique copper such as this. There are traces of verdigris to the low points of the design and around the corners and edges of the rim, and particularly to the reverse of the panel (see picture 9). These could be easily removed if required.Otherwise, condition is good for age. There are no dents or obvious scratches to the image itself. The outer rim is a little misshapen in places with some bending at the corners ( see picture 10).
