Length.27.5” [69.85 cm]: Width ...to Blad. Base. 5.3 cm: Guard width.17cm: Grip Tang.9.5 cm: Cartwheel Pommel Diameter. 6.3 cm: weight at 1.435 kg:A beautifully preserved VikingScandinavian Norse broad sverd in a complete curated condition. Sverds of thisage and type are rarely available for private purchase, as they are generallyclosely coveted in private collections. This classic type X / Xa is seen in awonderful stable condition with little oxide degradation. The sverd is thoughtto be a ‘pattern welded’ example, although the nature of the welded decorationis obscured by iron oxides to the inner fullers. The guard, and cartwheelpommel are complete and tight and the tang, which is integral to the blade. Please note the width of the pattern welded steel blad. to the guard, this wide nature designates its type to an X / Xa and is a classic Norse Viking signature for the assigned age and typology: Please see picture 12, which shows a contemporary rendering of just this sverd type:Reference:The Oakeshott typology was created by historian and illustrator Ewart Oakeshott to define and catalogue the medieval sverd based on physical form. It categorizes the sverds of the European Middle Ages (roughly 11th to 16th centuries) into 13 main types labelled X to XXII. Oakeshott introduced it in his treatise The Archaeology of Weapons: Arms and Armour from Prehistory to the Age of Chivalry in 1960:The system is a continuation of Jan Petersen’s typology of the Viking Sverd, introduced in De Norske Vikingsverd (“The Norwegian Viking Sverds”, 1919), modified in 1927 by R. E. M. Wheeler into a typology of nine types labelled I to VII by Wheeler, extended with VIII and IX by Oakeshott.Notes:In his book The Sverd in the Age of Chivalry, Oakeshott describesthe Type X in the following manner:“A broad, flat blade of medium length(average 31″) with a fuller running the entire length and fading out an inch orso from the point, which is sometimes acute but more often rounded. This fulleris generally very wide and shallow, but in some cases may be narrower (about1/3 of the blade’s width) and more clearly defined; a short grip, of the sameaverage length (3 3/4”) as the Viking sverds. The tang is usually very flat andbroad, tapering sharply towards the pommel. The cross is narrower and longerthan the more usual Viking kind–though the Vikings used it, calling it“Gaddjhalt” (spike-hilt) because of its spike-like shape. Generally, of squaresection, about 7″ to 8″ long, tapering towards the tips. In rare cases curved. The pommel is commonly of one of the Brazil-nut forms but may be of disk form.”Condition: Extremely Fine Display Condition:Minimal oxide degradation to outersurfaces with excellent sheer and tensile characteristics. All fixtures aretight and robust, and the sword is of curated museum quality.Provenance:Acquired from a private Oslocollection in 2008. The sverd is said to have been recovered in a permafroststratum in the Flovlev / Thyholm Region, in Denmark in the 1950's: This object has been in my private collection for over a decade:Available with a uniqueAncientpasts Certificate of Authenticity upon sale:Copyright Ancient Pasts | All rights reserved. ShippingUK Royal Mail Special Delivery: International Royal Mail Tracked and Signed:ReturnsAvailable please contact us for Terms and Conditions:PaymentWe accept payment via Debit & Credit Card and PayPal.
