Vintage Hamilton Chrono - Matic Panda Dial Cal 11 Automatic Chronograph, Box AS - IS
Item History & Price
Beautiful Hamilton Chrono-Matic that I received in the accompanying box. These boxes are not uncommon, but ones with the gold tag that says "CHRONOGRAPH & STOP WATCH..." are very difficult to find. The watch shows very little wear, and appears to have not been worn often. It was overhauled 2 years ago, but there is a timekeeping issue, as described below. The movement is running... strong, but it needs some work, so it is being offered as-is, with no returns.
Box: Excellent condition with no cracks, and felt lining tight and intact. Lid snaps shut.
Case: Sharp edges, and does not appear to have been polished. No nicks, no damage, and only some light scratches. The back cover retains its brushed finish. Some light scratches and one more apparent medium scratch on back cover, as seen in the pic. Original crown with strong Hamilton logo.
Dial: Beautiful dial with barely any flaws. All 12 lume plots intact. Small break in the lume on the minute hand. A very small negligible mark in the paint below "30" on the minute sub-dial that I mention for accuracy. Dial shows no scratches, and all lettering/markings are strong. The pics were taken both indoor and outdoor.
Crystal: Plastic crystal appears to be original. Excellent condition with minimal signs of wear.
Strap: Nothing special. Newer used nato strap in good condition that I think looks nice with this watch. If I were keeping the watch, I'd probably swap it for a leather rally strap.
Stopwatch function: Pushers have good click and spring action. I tested the stopwatch twice recently, and both times it ran 10 seconds fast over a 12-hour period, -about a second fast per hour, which is pretty accurate. The second hand flys back to 12, and the sub-dial needles advance properly.
Sometimes the hour needle does not fly back to position after running the stopwatch for a couple hours, and then reseting it with the bottom pusher. When this happens, the needle will then properly reset after running the stopwatch again for a few seconds, and then pressing the bottom pusher.
Movement and timekeeping: The movement is clean and running strong. It winds nicely, with the typical "grindy" feel that is common with cal 11's. The date advances properly. It was overhauled 2 years ago, with the clutch wheel, winding pinion, and cannon pinion being replaced.
When not running the stopwatch, time keeping is typically 2-4 minutes slow per day. When running the stopwatch, timekeeping can be as slow as 10 minutes per day. On one occasion I observed the watch running without the minute hand moving for about 3 minutes, and then it started to move again. Also, the crown turns very loosely when pulled to set the time, making it challenging to position the hands to the precise desired position. From what I've read on the forums, this could all mean that the cannon pinion needs to be adjusted. I am not a watchmaker, and there are no guarantee that this is the source of the issue.
Watch will be shipped fully insured via USPS Priority. For international buyers, I use Ebay's Global Shipping Program. WITH THE NEW STATE TAX IMPOSED ON EBAY BUYERS, YOU WILL LIKELY BE CHARGED PENNSYLVANIA SALES TAX AT CHECK-OUT.
And I repeat, THE WATCH IS ALSO LISTED FOR SALE ONLINE LOCALLY, SO THIS LISTING COULD END WITHOUT NOTICE. Thanks for looking! -Rich
