HOW TO IDENTIFY HIGH QUALITY GRADES: American watch companies make dozens of pocket watches grades – for instance: The Illinois watch Co. make a total of 264 different movement Grades w/ from 7 to 26 jewels. The term Grade use to distinguish between movements of differing quality. Differences between grades range from indiscernible to obvious but the collector the differences in quality are the greatest importance because, other things being equal, quality determine value.  Back in the day 1900’s a 24K gold 1 troy ounce bullion worth $18 USD. (The daily average salary was: $2.5 USD and 1 ounce worth 7.2 working days.) Today a 24K gold 1 troy ounce bullion worth ~ $1400.00 USD. The ratio is: 1440 / 18 = ~ 77. According to that calculation, a pocket watch sold back then for $40 USD, would be cost today more than $3, 000.00 USD (40 * 77 = 3, 080) On eBay it would be sold for fraction of that amount, as you know. (**today we take it for granted that everyone owns a watch, but there was a time when watches were expensive and were simply not something the average person could afford. The average wage for skilled workers in the United States in 1880 was around 25-cents an hour*, so a $50 USD watch could represent more than a month's wages for the average worker! Not to mention some of the fine railroad-grade pocket watches which sold for the unbelievable sum of $100 USD or more! A fine pocket watch was truly an outlay that only a wealthy person could afford) As a general rule, the quality of a movement is a direct result of two things: (1) labor and (2) precious material that have gone into its manufacture. The amount of labor is measured by such things as the number of adjustments indicated on the movement plates typically; the use of screws to hold jewel settings in place and the quality and degree of the finishing that has been applied to the steelwork and movement plates. For example: screws w/ chamfered heads and cornered slots, polished steelwork, particularly under the dial, and the elaborateness of damaskeening (although there are exceptions.) Precious material is measured by such things as solid gold balance screws, jewel settings, banking pins and train wheels; use of diamond cap jewels and ruby hole jewels, and solid nickel movement plates and double sunk glass enamel dials. Quality can be measured in an absolute or a relative sense. However, we when used in a relative sense to compare two watch movements it is important to take under consideration the improvements in technology that occurred as the watchmaking industry developed. Hence, for example, the labor required to make an early gilt keywind keyset movement might exceed that required to make a late grade “Bunn Special” however, the quality of the latter greatly exceeds that of the keywind keyset gilt movement. Consequently, quality comparisons are of greatest usefulness when confined to movements which were made during the same period of the company’s development. Beyond these basic considerations, judging the quality of American movement Grades is mostly a matter of examining the movements and / or reading the advertisements for the various Grades which appeared in the trade publications and wholesaler’s catalogs of the period , and from these sources of information making a judgement as to quantities of the labor and precious material that are represented. To illustrate the importance of the advertising information, consider the use of the word “ADJUSTED” as it was used as it was used on the early gilt movements. If we examine two early keywind pocket watches Grades for instance: one pocket-watch movement marked “Bunn” and one pocket watch movement marked “Stuart, ” both of which are marked ADJUSTED it would appear that they are equal quality. However, the advertisements for these Grades which appeared in an 1875 catalog state that the “Stuart” was adjusted to TEMPERATURE and ISOCHRONISM while the “Bunn” was adjusted only to TEMPERATURE. Consequently, the “Stuart” represents a greater investment of labor vs. the “Bunn” and is of higher quality. **ISOCHRONOUS Moving in equal time i.e. when the watch keeps the same time whatever the extant of the arc of vibration of the balance wheel. Hence, ideally, the watch keeps accurate time when fully wound and at any period throughout its going until the mainspring is unwound, it is said to be isochronous. In practice it works that way toward the end of the unwound mainspring – perhaps several hours prior, depend on manufacturer specifications for each movement Grade. On the same basis, back in the day, the “Stuart” was being sold for $70 USD (today $5, 390.00 USD) while the “Bunn” sold for $52.00 USD (today $4004.00 USD) This fact suggests another way of determining relative quality, but it must be used w/ caution because watches were sold at a variety of different prices at different times, depending on conditions that also  varied. Discounting was widely practiced so price comparisons are most valid when made within a single advertisement or, if that not possible, at least between advertisements from the same year. Another technique that can be used to normalize prices is to compare the prices of the same Grade in two advertisements. If these are the same, then other Grades probably can be evaluated on the basis of price. If the same Grade is priced differently than the ratio of prices can be used as a basis for normalizing the prices of the other Grades. For example, if the Grade “Stuart” is priced at $70 in list A and $35 in list B, then the prices of all other list B watches should be doubled before comparing them to other Grades in list A.              High quality grades always come w/ high quality dials. However, dials are fragile and often were changed legitimately as a result of damage during the active life of a pocket watch. Therefore, knowing the relative quality of dials is of more practical value in determining the quality of that movement. In this regard, advertisement again can be helpful because the dial is frequently mentioned. Seasoned collectors will have little or no difficulty judging the quality of the of American & Swiss watches but to aid the beginner we have listed below some of the more easily observed quality-determining features to look for. In each case the highest quality representation comes first and the lowest last.   BALANCE WHEEL: Expansion with gold screws and four meantime screws.
