ITALIAN - ROMAN SCHOOL 17thC - RED CHALK STUDY OF AN ARM CIRCLE MOLA
Item History & Price
The present drawing, executed in red chalk on laid paper, depicts a superb study of a right arm.
Authorship : the drawing is from the Italian-Roman School, attributed to the near circle of Pier Francesco Mola (Mola made quite some simular studies of feet, hands and arms, quite often accompanied by an inscription in ink - our drawing is very simular to these studies).
PIER FRANCESCO MOLA (Coldrerio 1612 - Rome 1666) : Italian painter, draughtsman of the High Baroque, mainly active in Rome. At the age of four, he moved to Rome with his father Giovanni Battista, a painter. His earliest training was with the late mannerist painter Il Cavaliere d'Arpino. Later, he worked in the studio of Francesco Albani. In 1633 he travelled to Venice and Bologna to finish his training (1633-1647). With the exeption of these years, he lived in Rome for the rest of his life.
During his artistical career, he was a famous fresco painter, working for important clients, such as Pope Alexander VII. His other artistical work shows smaller paintings (portraits, religious scenes). He was elected "Principe" of the Accademica di San Luca, the Roman artists' professional association (1662), but his last years were neither profitable nor prolific. With his looser style and handling, more naturalistic palette, and interest in exploring landscape elements, Mola differs from the prevailing, highly-theoretical classicism of such leading 17th-century Roman painters as Andrea Sacchi.
