Auction description France 1850: Beautiful Portrait of a Young Woman, Italian Renaissance influenceFrom a recent auction in Paris, comes this lovely Romantic period drawing, a finely executed portrait in pencil of a beautiful young woman. I date this picture to the mid-nineteenth century, when Leonardo da Vinci's portrait of the Mona Lisa was given quasi-mythical status by French Romantic poets such as Théophile Gauthier. This young lady is dressed in a Renaissance-styl...e robe, and her faint smile as she looks out towards the viewer gives her something of a "Gioconda" look. But whatever the stylistic influences on the artist, it's a delightful work, well worthy of a place on your wall. Dimensions of the picture are about 7.5 inches by 6 inches (sight). With the included mat and frame, we get 11 inches by 9.5 inches. There is a little paper and foxing, but the image shows well and it's all ready to hang and enjoy. A fine acquisition.
