Known for landscap...e and figure painting, Illustration. As a young boy he worked in his father's music store and became a skilled pianist. His interest in art began in 8th grade. First copying Gibson Girls from the magazines at the Elk's Club where he was supposed to be setting up pins in the bowling alley and then drawing on the edges of his examination papers.Often he would hide behind posts or crates to draw merchants or town characters in his town's business section. In 1906, he attended the Chicago Art Institute and later the Chicago Academy of Fine Arts. His first job in Chicago was the art editor for Redbook Magazine, where he met many of the county's top Illustrators. In 1914, he moved to Leonia, New Jersey to become a free-lance illustrator and attend the Harvey Dunn School of Illustration. There, he met and became lifelong friends with Harvey Dunn, Charles S. Chapman, Frank Street, John Steuart Curry and Harry Wickey.Between 1927-1972, 13 of his articles were published in magazines like Scribner's Magazine, American Artists and The Saturday Evening Post.He also wrote, illustrated and published his book of poetry " Rattling Home For Christmas " in 1941.In 1941, he also began creating war propaganda material for " Artists for Victory " and continued until the end of WWII. Following the war, he created articles and Illustrations for Ford Motor co. and West Coal co.In 1948, he created 33 illustrations for " An American Tragedy " by Theodore Dreiser. In the 1950's he began to shift his focus towards his own creative work.
Much of his work resides in collections like The Library of Congress, Washington D.C.; Sheldon Museum of Art, Lincoln Nebraska; Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York City. The Museum of Nebraska Art is the holder of the largest single collection of his work, amounting to around 3, 000 pieces and archival material.
